Wait a minute. I know that mill. That was in a movie I saw in the last 6 months. I’m pretty sure it was Thumbsucker.
The list of movies it could have been in is pretty small – I remember asking the director where that shell of a building was during the Q&A session post-screening.
well, it’s definitely in Ring of Fire, a movie which is entirely set in Vernonia and in which one of my uncles also has a brief starring role running away from a train.
i saw thumbsucker and i remember the part you’re talking about and you’re right it totally looks the same. here’s the filming locations. sure, beaverton is about 45 minutes from vernonia, but they aren’t listing it individually so i think maybe it’s not the same abandoned mill. though probably one very close by.
Wow, this is a little bit crazy. I just watched that movie Thumbsucker a few days ago when a friend brought it over. About half way through someone asked me if that’s what Oregon looks like. I am from Vernonia and remember as a kid exploring the old saw mill, and I was instantly overwhelmed with nostalgia when I saw that scene with the two kids getting high in the very same saw mill that I had nervously entered as a 9 year old.
I was sure it was the same place. SO I searched it on Google and found this, and your photo of the sawmill. I have not been to that place in 16 years since I moved to New Jersey in 1990.
Well thats all, I just had to comment, since this pretty much blew my mind.
BALEETED!
Emporer seagulls DO rule.
Emperor seagulls, even.
