and the final entry in film festival season is upon us: the international film festival. where mostly what i want to see is asian films so it’s much like the asian film festival. good times. if you’re interested in seeing any of the following or anything else that strikes your fancy in their line-up, let me know. i am always looking for film festival friends. especially since i’ve edited this list down from the 37 movies i first chose. there are definitely a lot more movies i’d love to see. i mean, there’s a documentary on al franken’s book tour, pornography from japan and taiwan, a doc on jonestown, a japanese movie about an old gay rest home, a movie with shu qi, carthusian monks, giant buddhas, heart transplants, a film by zwigoff with the other writer from ghost world, and cockbyte.

starring zhang ziyi as a tanuki (uh…it’s a raccoon in japanese myth who can turn into a woman to lure travellers) there’s singing and dancing and a love story.

Executive Koala

Friday 28, 10:30pm, Kabuki

a japanese businessman with the head of a koala working for the rubbles pickles factory. i mean, HELLO, this has the most brilliant premise ever. KOALA-HEAD. plus, it’s compared in the description to the happiness of the katakuris. the best japanese musical about murdering mayhem ever.

holy crap, prairie home companion is already sold out. unless you want to go to the party afterwards and those tickets are like $70.

sean: to prevent a repeat of ‘colma: the musical’, i have already ordered tickets for executive koala for 2 so far.

Mario turns into a Tanuki and can change into a statue in Mario 3.

    Also, from Wikipedia:

The wild tanuki has unusually large testicles, a feature often comically exaggerated in artistic depictions of the creature. Tanuki may be shown with their testicles flung over their backs like a traveller’s pack, or using them as drums. Tanuki are also typically depicted as having large bellies. They may be shown drumming on their bellies instead of their testicles, especially in children’s art.

Claudine and I are both down for Princess Tanuki and Executive Koala. When you’re offering giant animal scrota and murderous Koala-heads, how could we resist?

Every film I’ve ever seen with you at one of these festivals has been really enjoyable. So I’ll see whatever I can with you. I still have tickets for the ballet for around that time, but I can try to switch them to a night you don’t have a movie planned if you still want to go.

  5. michele

ooh, i forgot about the ballet. well, when is it again?

BD, you should buy tickets to executive koala if you want to come since i already got them for sean and i. and christine, are you saying you want to come to all 3?

well…the part where he’s peeing on the lamp post i *think* says “ganbatte” which would mean, “work hard” or “stay in there”. that’s all i’ve got. beautiful, beautiful visuals of koala kacho flying around though. thank you, BD.
